Seems like they were the least used so there was sign of lime build up in the shower and other issues. We were in a big group and some who got put very far away had trouble with their rooms. Spacious, comfortable and everything worked. Getting taxis to leave the resort is relatively easy. We did pay a few golf cart drivers to take us to the other resorts when we were in a rush. There are also tons of golf carts but apparently not to transport guests, which is ridiculous. I personally didn’t have a huge problem with it because I only took it a handful of times but friends that were “upgraded” to the adult side were not able to move around the property easily. Transportation - there is a shuttle that is supposed to come every 20 minutes. All restaurants are far and they don’t let you take food out. We did wish there were more places to grab snacks/quick bites while at the beach or pool. We had fun by the pool bars and they have some activities pool side. You are not missing anything at Maya Palace. Everything is way more central from Colonial. If you have a family stay in Barcelo Colonial. They do maintain things very well and it’s mostly clean (a little trash overflow in the beach area). It is very beautiful and tropical feeling. They were both just ok and we felt like we were being rushed in both places. We did get into the Italian and Brazilian restaurants. If you go for a short stay you may not mind it so much but 8 days of buffet was not working out. There was one night we went into Playa del Carmen town to get good food and good drinks. There were no specialty or fun drinks anywhere. Also, they offer room service but this is not included. We spent every day trying to figure out reservations. To add insult to injury, getting reservations at any of the a la carte restaurants was a chore. We’ve stayed at many all-inclusive resorts and this is truly the worst food we’ve had. The a la carte restaurants were a little better. The food at the buffet was mediocre at best. Restaurants/Food - this was our least favorite experience. Plenty of chairs and palm trees for shade. The area by the pier is the best for snorkeling. However, this contributes to great snorkeling because of all the wildlife that populates. The only problem is that some sections are very rocky. Below are some details: Beach - the beach water was one of the nicest I’ve seen on the Riviera Maya side since all of the seaweed problem started. It was not terrible and we did have a nice time. I usually stay in the same place however prices are much higher now so we decided to try something different. Review Barceló Maya Palace - pros and cons I’ve been to Cancun/Riviera Maya area 6 times. If you go at 8am, everything is already taken, found that to be annoying as it should be available for all to enjoy. People go super early and place towels and belongings under seats in the cabana and seats under the shade. The shaded areas by the pool are always reserved in advance. We tried everyday and there was always an excuse as to why we couldn’t. Very difficult to get a reservation for any water activity. Buffets we’re average, I would suggest walking to the other hotels and try other buffets for a little variety. If you’re hungry you have to dry off and dress and go to one of the sit down buffets. No food service on pool or beach, that really would have been nice to have. Be prepared for a lot of walking! We stayed in Oaxaca building which wasn’t close to anything, so walk to breakfast took about 10min. We waited about 15min in line, then when it was our turn the process took over 45min, not sure why. Few cons…other reviews stated there was a long check in and it’s not exaggerated. Beach is a little rocky but overall clean compared to other resorts we’ve been to in Cancun. Entertainment by the pool was great and fun. Pool was beautiful and huge and never felt crowded. We had no issues getting reservations at the specialty restaurants, and food was very good. The grounds are well kept, staff really work hard at keeping it clean, and overall felt very safe there. This was our first time at the resort and overall we were very pleased.
